Romeo and Juliet is the story of two “star-crossed” lovers whose families are engaged in a blood feud. Romeo, a somewhat comical fellow, swings from his adoration of young Rosaline to utter enchantment with Juliet Capulet when he sneaks into a party his family is having. When the two arrange to meet, Juliet becomes smitten as well. Overhearing her from her balcony, Romeo learns of her love for him, despite the hatred between her family, the Capulets, and his, the Montagues. The next day they are married by Friar Laurence, who hopes to reconcile the families. The major complication occurs when Romeo's best friend Mercutio becomes engaged in a fight with Juliet's cousin Tybalt. Romeo tries to break up the fight, but this action results in the accidental killing of Mercutio. Feeling the need to revenge his kinsman, Romeo slays Tybalt, and then is banished from the city. Before he leaves, through the help of Juliet's nurse, he spends the night in her chamber. The next day Juliet goes to the friar to appeal for help. He gives her a potion that puts her into a coma-like state for 42 hours, and sends a messenger to Romeo to have him meet her in the family tomb. The messenger never arrives, and Romeo instead is told of her death. When he arrives in the tomb, he finds Juliet who is really asleep, but believing she is dead, Romeo swallows poison. When she awakes and sees her dead lover, she kills herself with his dagger. At the end, the Prince of the city admonishes the families for this result of their feuding, and the families are reconciled.
